Let's Deal with Scoliosis

What is Scoliosis?
Have you heard of people saying they have a curved back and/or “C” or “S” shape spine?
Well it isn't a myth and it is a condition known as scoliosis.
There are cases for severe scoliosis that you may see muscle imbalance and visible curving of the back.
However in most cases, scoliosis cannot be easily seen with our eyes by looking at our backs. Hence, when a full spine x-ray is taken, people are shocked at their backs being curved. This emphasises the importance of X-Ray imaging in uncovering our spinal condition.
How do you detect Scoliosis?
As scoliosis can happen as early as birth and up to adulthood, it is important to create an awareness of this condition. Generally as early as 10 years old till 50 to 60 years old, people with scoliosis will tend to have several symptoms such as pain, soreness, and stiffness. However, at early stages, children with scoliosis will not have any symptoms.
Hence, the best way for parents to detect it is by looking for these signs: (1)
Head tilted to one side
Uneven Shoulders
More obvious shoulder blades as compared to other sides
Visible rib hump on one side of the back when bending forward
Clothes may hung unevenly
Uneven Waist Curve
Uneven Hip
As these are a general guideline, further examinations and specific diagnostic imaging are required to be performed by a professional to accurately diagnose this condition.
Not all curves are Scoliosis
When people look at their spine, they might see their backs are not entirely straight and they might wonder:
“Do I have scoliosis?”
Well let us break it down to you on the types of scoliosis:
Types of Scoliosis
AIS (Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis)- The most common type of Scoliosis, whereby the cause is unknown or hereditary and it commonly starts at a young age.
Functional Scoliosis-
Common Causes:
Prolonged sitting with bad posture
functional leg length imbalance
past traumas.

Are you doing these in your daily life? These are the common ways to cause spinal and pelvic misalignment.

Have you heard of the leaning tower of Pisa in Italy? The building was built during the 12th century and at that point, it was built on soft ground, which could not support the structure’s weight. Hence as decade goes by, the structure starts to tilt and increases till its completion in the 14th century.

Now this will also happen to our spine if we do not have a strong foundation. Our pelvic is the foundation of the spine, when there is a pelvic or spinal misalignment, it could not properly support the body's weight.
Hence it will exert more pressure and create more instability to the spinal segments above to compensate. Our body is a smart structure, it will try to adapt to the changes to maintain its centre of gravity, hence spinal curvature happens.
However, over time, if these misalignments persist without correction, a cascade of issues will inevitably emerge. This includes uneven weight distribution, pain, fatigue, muscle imbalance, muscle weakness and many more.

CLASSIFICATION OF SCOLIOSIS
How do you know if you have scoliosis?
One widely used guideline is the Cobb’s Angle’s measurement. (2)
Definition of scoliosis -> 10 degree is considered as scoliosis.

What should you do when you are diagnosed with Scoliosis?
Scoliosis at younger ages have a higher tendency to progress further/ worsen due to the ongoing growth and development of the spine in younger individuals whereas at older ages when their bones are fully mature ( age 18-25 ) still have a tendency but at a slower rate compared to younger age. (3)
The optimal age to be checked and treated is 3-18 years old. As at this age, their bones are not fully matured and are very responsive to treatment. Hence there is a better chance of correction. (4)
